Hay!!

It seemed so simple. Just drive along. Bill will pick up the bales. We'll put them in the hay loft.

As we started to pick up the bales, Dale our farming neighbor was out in front baling. The bales really explode out of the machine.

Here is Bill during our second run. Each time we could fit about 45 bales into the bed of the truck.

Dale ran out of baling twine and had to change the spools. When he finished, his counter read 466. There were several bales that had to be redone. So we figure that the true count was somewhere near 450.  Oh yea, at the beginning we were keeping count. But as the barn filled up and we got more tired, we lost count.

We borrowed a hay elevator from our friends at England Acres.
This was such a life saver. If we had to carry all those bales up the stairs we'd still be out there doing it. Now we have to find one of our own, it is vital with a 2 story barn.  This weekend we will be setting up the barn for the does and ewes.

  1. Lisa, I'm totally in hay envy! 450 bales is a great start for the long winter. Not near enough, but a great start at being self sufficient. I'm in love with your new barn and if truth be told....I also have barn envy!!! Wow, to someday have a "real" barn!

  2. Thanks Diane! As you a small farmer you know how much work everything is. Hay was no exception. Especially since it took us 5 years to get any!!
